one down one to go

For the last 8 months or so Sutton has insisted she will be Belle for Halloween. Last week, without a pattern, I turned an old sheet and 8 yards of tulle into the awesomest Belle ever (pardon my pride, I am REALLY happy with how this turned out). I probably spent at least five hours on the costume. Two days ago Sutton announced that she wanted to be a ballerina. I was not happy to hear that and happily I was able to convince her to where the Belle dress. She was pleased with it once she was dressed. I curled her hair and even put a touch of make-up on her.

Liam just recently made his final choice for his costume. He started describing it for me as he sketched "a wizard with no wand but a long staff. a pointy hat and a long beard. a belt and a money pouch."

Once I saw his sketch I said "you want to be Gandolf". Liam has no idea who Gandolf is. He has never seen Lord of the Rings (he is only 6) but somehow that is exactly what he was describing:

Creating a beard will be the most challenging part of this costume. I think I will use Merrilee's beard idea. The rest will be cake. I bought a braided belt at Salvation Army for $1.50 and I think I have enough fabric in my stash for the tunic, cape and hat. The staff will be found in the back yard.

I have no idea what Ezra will be. A friend of mine made the coolest Where the Wild Things Are costume for her baby. A brilliant idea but I don't want to copy her. I am running out of time...

Sutton's costume is perfect! I am glad that she is no longer insisting on being a ballerina. And I love Liam's drawing with the labels. :)

The Belle costume is perfect. I've had the same problem - I. wanted to be Belle, I spent forever sewing it, and then she wanted to wear her ballerina costume. Glad you were able to convince Sutton! It looks fantastic!

Ran across your site somehow and just wanted to say you did a great job on the costume. As soon as you mentioned Belle I thought of this site for a Belle hair-do.

Gorgeous Belle! I'd use a natural wool Roving for the beard. Just attach it with spirit gum.

Lindsay- thank you SO much for linking to the Belle hair-do! It is perfect. I was struggling on how to achieve the Belle hair (as you can probably tell in the pictures) and now it will be perfect for Halloween night and the other parties we are attending.

JaymeKnits- I don't know what 'wool Roving' is... do tell.

The belle dress is gorgeous! Just take some cotton batting, stretch it out and dye it grey. It'll make a great beard and be very cheap

Wow, that Belle dress is amazing! Looking back at it, she'll realized how awesome her mom is to have made it for her.

I love Liam's drawings-- he and Tate are so much alike it almost makes me sad! just sad that we aren't neighbors. can't wait to see the finished product!

I made a Gandalf costume for my 7 year old that loves The Hobbit. It is awesome! Got a witch hat at Target from the $1 bin, then got a piece of white long-haired fur from the fabric store. I cut that about shoulder length and then just hand sewed it to the inside rim of the hat - makes him look like he really is wearing a white hair wig but was way cheaper. We got a beard made out of the same sort of fur at a party store for $3, but it would be so easy to make your own - it was the same sort of fur with a hole cut out for the mouth and then a piece of elastic to go over the ears and around the head to hold in place. Just need to put something around the mouth so bits of fur don't shed.

Way to go Erin! Little A has changed his mind about 5 times about what hes wants to be and it has had me in near tears (after all the sewing I've done) but he's going to be what I made of go without at this point :). So I know how you feel. Liam's costume should be great as well!

Susan, I LOVE that felt beard! So cute. I might make on for me, just for fun!

Thanks everyone for the beard suggestions. You guys are amazing! I made one over the weekend and it turned out well, I think. Liam pretty much wore it all day, every day.

Thanks Mama Thompson!

The Belle dress is beautiful! I feel your pain on the changing of the minds. My sis and her DH (who have no kids) come and dress up w/us for Halloween. Months in advance they ask me what theme we're going to do. I tell them, "I'll let you know on Oct 24th or they'll change their minds 50 times!"

SO SO cute! Great Belle costume...I am also super excited to see the Gandolf. Aren't kids funny! My daughter wanted to be tinkerbell...but when we went to the store to get some fabric she was not at all pleased that I was choosing green! ha ha. So, she is "pink tinkerbell" instead. he he. You know, one of tinkerbell's other outfits! =) too funny.
