matchy matchy

I have a little confession: I have always thought dressing your kids in matching outfits was a bit lame but now that I have two girls, the urge to put them in matching clothes has hit me unexpectedly. Sutton loves the idea and Gemma can't voice her opinion so there is nothing to stop me!

I made Sutton's top with the pattern I made up for the polka dot dress. I had wanted the top to be a little longer but I was working with fabric I salvaged from a failed skirt I attempted a few years ago. I made the top as long as I could and to save length didn't hem the bottom. I love having that option with jersey knit!

In place of the hook and eye on the polka dot dress I did a big yellow flower button and elastic cord.

Gemma's outfit is a simple onesie dress with a ruffle at the neck. I have seen many tutorials for onesie dresses and had even made a few as gifts. I made one for Gemma about a month ago and was so happy with how it turned out until I tried to put it on her- where the skirt was sewn to the onesie the onesie no longer stretched. It was almost impossible to get the dress over her head and onto her body and once I did get it onto her the seam dug into Gemma's chubby belly. After a little brainstorming, I figured out a way to make a onesie dress that fit! I'll make up my own onesie dress tutorial soon.

I love these girls! They are beautiful and so much fun to dress!!

Looks to me like Gemma likes matching with her big sister just fine! They are beautiful, just like their mommy.

My mom put us in matching dresses and we LOVED it. Until we didn't love it and then she stopped. :) The outfits are cute and those pictures are adorable!

Isn't it funny how having children changes all those things you swore you'd never do? I am enjoying making my girls matching/coordinating outfits as long as they'll tolerate it. I often make the same dress pattern with different fabric or colors to make them not too matchy.

Love this! I also have two girls who love to match, well the older one anyway. The younger one, like yours, is too little to notice, but sure loves her big sister, so I assume she does too. ;) The problem with buying matching dresses is that the older one is almost six and the younger one is seven months. Normal clothing stores don't sell matching clothes in both of their sizes usually. So I love the idea of making some dresses. I can't wait to try out the Boden knock-off tutorial you wrote up and am looking forward to the baby onesie dress too!

So cute. I love Sutton's top- I vow I am going to try jersey soon. When I have any money to buy some jersey.
Your door is to DIE for. I love that yellow color. You should email me what it is. And Sutton looks beautiful in the last photo, especially.
p.s. Matchy isn't the same as coordinating, and I think your girls would look adorable no matter what!

Oh my, your girls are so cute. Gemma looks so big. The first time I put my girls in matching outfits, I was so worried about them looking lame. They got rave reviews and loved being the same, I was hooked.

Too cute! I have a 2nd girl on the way, and they have 2 matching outfits already... not matchy matchy, but incorporating the same fabrics. It's too much fun, and my older absolutely adores that she'll match her sister.

I promise to stop when they don't enjoy it anymore. But as the younger sister, I loved it while growing up myself.

adorable, Erin! I love matching my girls, and I resisted it also at first, but love to do it now!

btw, I bought the EXACT same polka dot knit on my trip to utah this past weekend with plans to make the EXACT same boden knock off you did the tutorial for. Hope you don't mind me knocking off your knock off. lol!

So cute! I love that you can make matching outfits for your girls instead of buying them. My mom made my 2 older sisters and me matching outfits all growing up...I love looking back at those pictures and my mom's amazing sewing skills....your girls will do the same!

I have twin girls - 3-1/2. I love dressing them in matching or coordinating outfits, especially if they're pink or purple. They don't mind as of yet, but are pretty vocal about wanting dresses over any other style of clothing. It's so fun, huh?

Matching is different than coordinating. They are adorable!! And I love S's top!!

Erin--they are beautiful!

(Try no matchy-matchy with twins!! I tried absolutely not matching, then coordinating and then just had to match so I knew there were 2 clean outfits! LOL! )

How cute is this? What beautiful children you have! I LOVE matching. The yellow button detail is so perfect. I am TOTALLY matching my children, despite the boy/girl thing. In fact, I think it will be a lot more fun in terms of co-ordination! I like to match. In fact, sometimes my husband and I match (on purpose...;-). We're cool.

I love this! And it's coordinating, not matchy ;-) I always wanted to dress mynkids alike, then I got a boy and a girl! The one time I tried to make them matching outfits they ended up looking like The Vontrap Kids :-P So I am super jealous of your cute matching ensemble!
