this and that

July really snuck up on me. I didn't even decorate for the Fourth of July holiday! I had really wanted to make this banner from A Bit of Sunshine. I got the paint chip cards from the store but then got busy with other projects. Next year, I guess.

We spent most of the holiday weekend in Asheville, NC with my brother-in-law Jon and sister-in-law Jen who will soon be Ashevilles newest residents. Asheville is a fun little city and we are excited to be able to visit often!

Jon + Jen's cute new home

Liam and Sutton playing in the fountain at Pack Square.

Ezra and Gemma passed out in the strollers. Look at their little red cheeks. It was a hot day!

Several weeks ago The Long Thread hosted a knock-off series called handMAYde is better. As someone who is not a stranger to knock-offs I was a little surprised at the backlash her series caused.  I have thought about this subject a lot since reading Ellen's opinion and her readers comments. My opinion is that it's fine to copy or be inspired by others work (independent artists or big companies) as long as you are clear in stating the source of your inspiration and you are not selling the knock-off. It is never okay to copy someones work and claim it as your own design whether or not you would be making money off the item.

I am bringing this up because last night Michael had me watch a series called "Everything is a Remix". The author claims that there are no truly original ideas. All ideas are an improvement or a combination of others ideas/creations. It's a fascinating argument and I am inclined to agree with him. Watch it, it will make you think!

My husbands younger sister, Kate is getting married next week. So much to do so little time. Last night I made a bunch of pinwheels. Tonight I am making a sash for the bride. Busy, busy!

I hope you are having a great week!

I totally agree with nothing is original...I crack up sometimes at posts people do about some idea that "they thought of" and I think...my mom did something similar to that about 30 years ago...she just didn't have twitter/facebook/blogs to show the world...and I'm pretty sure the things she did she learned from her mom and grandma and on and on...things just improve..get better...are reinvented whatever. I love when people get all up in arms about things...cracks me up.

By the way....LOVE the pinwheels!

I think that there are some original ideas, but it's hard to claim something as truly unique when many people will have the same idea and all post about it online without knowing. If you do know about it, source it. If you think it's your idea and find out it's already been posted somewhere else...well, no biggie.
So fun to have you guys up to visit this past weekend! Can't wait until the house is remodeled and we actually have furniture. :)

Can't help sharing this quote posted by a favorite designer of mine: “Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery – celebrate it if you feel like it.” — Jim Jarmusch

That is so interesting about the knock off backlash! Really made me think, and I think I agree with you. Good luck with your busy wedding prep!

Hello, I found your blog looking for t-shirt refashions and I think we would be friends in real life! I too am LDS, love to craft, thrift, refashion, and am very cheap. Love your blog, your refashions and DIY. Oh, and your cute kids! I agree with your view of inspiration, it is a very volatile subject though! So nice to meet you, I will be back!
