chore charts

Go here to download the chore chart!

In December Liam, my oldest, was begging me to make a chore chart. Strange, I know. I finally got around to it a couple of weeks ago.

I found this one at ModEcoKids.com that I love. I love it because it is free, it is customizable, it is simple and it is cute. I copied the polka dot design (I LOVE polka dots) to spruce up our Family Rules page.

I made one for Liam and one for Sutton. Their chores are not identical (they are better at and enjoy doing different types of chores) but they are age appropriate. I wish I had left one line blank for extra credit type things. Like last week when Liam surprised me by cleaning his bathroom. After printing the charts I used self-laminating sheets to laminate them. Now we can make check marks with a dry erase marker and re-use the charts each week.

Um, I just realized that I spelled vacuum wrong. Please don't mock me! :)

Michael and I deliberated whether or not to pay them for their chores. On one hand we felt we didn't need to pay them for helping out around the house on the other hand we thought it was a good opportunity to teach them about saving, spending and giving money. In the end we decided that the kids will earn $.05 for every check mark at the end of the week. Not much, the most they could earn in a week is $2.80, but it is enough to get them excited. And they are! These charts are working better so far than any chore system we have tried before.

UPDATE: This is for you Celeste! Our family rules and daily expectations. (Click on the photo to enlarge)

My parents had chore charts for my sister and I growing up. They did pay us {15 cents per check} but the kicker was that if we didn't get at least 10 checks {I believe there were 15 total, and we could choose which chores to do and leave the ones we didn't want for the sister who was too slow! haha}, then we didn't get ANY cash for that week. Very motivational!

oh my gosh...you are so cute! i love this idea! really there is not one idea that you post that i don't like.

i have a question for you...did you post a tutorial for your christmas banner? i want to make one for my baby girl just for fun and i was curious how you did yours.

Lovely Little Nest- $.15! Your parents are making me look like a cheapskate! I am sure I will have to increase the rate as the kids get older. I like the very motivation of competition. I will have to try that down the road.

andrea- i didn't post a tut on the bunting but I did link to one: http://chezlarsson.com/myblog/2009/03/mini-bunting.html
if you can't find (or don't want to use) double sided scrapbook paper glue two pages together or glue and fold one page in half. let dry and cut into triangles and sew together. i can't wait to see yours!

I would LOOOVVVEEE to see your family rules. We are struggling with boundries and rules at our house and I need some ideas. We have been using a points system for daily item similar to yours. I'll have to post it on my blog - it's been pretty effective (when we are consistant...wink wink)

You know where you get the spelling skills, right? Vacuum has ALWAYS been a problem for me.

We had something similar growing up. Kept us in line :)

I always spell vacuum wrong, or is it vaccum? Lol!

Thanks for this Erin. I did one up today for my nearly 4 yr old daughter. I love polka-dots too!

Hi Erin! Thanks so much for sharing the chore chart on your blog. I'm glad you found it helpful. :)

Erin,
I love these! I also do chore charts but these are much cuter. We don't pay for chores but I have a list of jobs that I will pay $1.00 for that they can do (when their regular chores are finished). The $$$ chore list got them excited about finishing their regular chores so they can get to the good ones that pay. This is what my parents did when I was little. I remember when I was older and I wanted to buy something I never asked my parents for money. I asked them for work. I hope it has the same results for my kids.

These are much cuter than our chore charts! I'm going to have to make some!

I am totally stealing your chore chart. I have been needing this for my kids!

We use similar chore charts. Instead of paying our son money we use craft puffballs. Each chore he does he gets a little one. He trades 20 little ones for 1 big one. There is a list of things he can spend his puffballs on. Each thing has a certain value. There are small things like candy or toys or a day more special things like a day trip to the zoo or a big prize like something he has wanted for a while but we wouldn't just go out and buy for no reason(bike, slip n' slide, trampoline) He has totally forgotten about the candy and is working towards big things. He has earned a bike and today he will finally earn the trampoline. He learned the first week that in comparison the candy isn't worth it! He has been working for the trampoline forever but he has learned patience and counting along the way. He figured he could spend his puffballs on something little or save them for the trampoline and enjoy it while he earned the other stuff. Now he is always asking if there are special things he can do to earn more puffballs. Very motivating! He has learned he has to work to earn things and that everything isn't always handed to you! Just a note: We take back puffballs for bad behavior and that is worse than death in his eyes!

Hi there!

Your blog is so cute! I am homeschooling mom to two boys and I just started working...Needless to say we need to get in to a routine around here and I love the Family rules, as well. Would you be so kind to send me a downloadable file for that? Also, is there a way to edit the other words on the chore chart? Our family speaks Spanish at home and so I try to keep that consistent with our charts and schedules. I really appreciate it!

Warmly,
Eliza

I absolutely love your "Contribute to my family" chart! We have tried chore charts before with little success! I have edited and printed out your version already. Now to frame them and hange them up! I would also like to be able to use your template for the family rules. It looks so nice when they all match. I've already written our rules up, but if you could send me the template I would appreciate it! (robin.foley@yahoo.com)

Can you email me your family rules (editable)? I don't necessarily need the rules, but I was hoping to find the same document to match the chore chart.

Great chore chart. My mom didn't pay me for chores I did because she flat out told me, "You are earning your keep." It also taught me that in life we have to work hard and sometimes go above what we are expected to do to achieve more in the long run. (Note: I think that kids should earn something for doing chores.)

I did a chore chart as a Nanny for 3 older kids. In the summer we would do something special every friday. The kids got points for their chores and whoever had the most points at each weeks end got to bring a friend to "Fun Friday". And the kid with the most points at the end of the summer? I did all their chores for a whole week! They were older kids so tough chores - mowing the lawn, cleaning pool, water grass and flowers, dishes, bathrooms, floors, etc. It was a tough week ;).

This is awesome. I think my oldest daughter is old enough to start earning morning for her chores. We do a daily system before they go to bed and I hate bribing them with dessert. I am going to propose this system at dinner tonight :)
