thrifted hutch

I recently bought this hutch at my local Salvation Army. It had only been there for two days but I was able to talk the manager into taking 25% off the price (they usually won't give a discount unless the item has been there for at least a week) so I paid only $30.

I have plans to do something bold à la Barb from Knack Studios:

As much as I love the orange that is not what I want to do with this piece. I am thinking teal, specifically "Woodlawn Charm". I first saw it here. It is the perfect teal. Not too light or too dark more green than blue. I love it.

My adoration was further cemented when I saw this kitchen.

I am also considering an avocado-y green color. There was a house for sale near me that I would have bought in a heart beat if I had the money. There was much to love about this house; full brick, one mile from Liam's school, sunroom, completely renovated and much more but what really hooked me was the kitchen:

I can't have that green kitchen but I could paint my hutch a similar color.

My dining room is a little small though. I am afraid that having a piece of furniture painted in such a bold color would be too much for the space. Should I play it safe & boring and paint it white? Also the wall color in the dining room will not be staying that dark olive green color. The whole room is getting a bit of a make-over, albeit a slow one.

What would you do?

I love the first color choice (well, I really also love the orange, but know that's not your plan). I love the orange KitchenAid in the first kitchen!

Oh, go for color! If you don't like it, it can always be white later. What a great deal you got!

Go bold or go home ;) if you take all that time and paint it white you will always wonder what it would've looked like in your first choice which was a bold color! Besides if it IS overwhelming for your space you can always paint it white later & leave the backs of the shelves the fun color?!

I agree with them. Go bold. You can always change it if you're not happy.

Love the hutch!! I'd go with the teal. I love the teal/robins egg blue color of those kitchen cabinets.

I agree...just do it! If you don't like it, paint it white and add some color with some fun wallpaper in the back of the shelves...can't wait to see what you do with it! great find!

I love the hutch! I think it fits well on that wall too. What colors are you doing in the dining room? I think you should paint the hutch a fun, punchy color (i like the teal best!) and incorporate that into your new dining room plans.

I love the orange, but I think I would soon lose my fasination. I would go with green. Green goes with everything.

What a steal.

That's a gorgeous hutch. I love it.
I say go for it and paint it a bold color. It's only paint. Live with it for a bit and see what happens. You won't know 'til you try. :)

Paint it teal. If you don't like it, then you can give it to me! :p
What color are you painting the DR?

I hear turquoise is making a comeback big! I have seen several pieces of furniture painted that color. Also, what about black?

The turquoise tones are my fave. What a great find. I'm excited to see what you come up with.

Definitely teal. There are many shades and even a light shade would be so much more fun then simple white. That is a fun piece and I am so excited you got such a great deal for it! Good luck and I cannot wait to see pics.:)

Holy Cow! What a deal! That is such a great piece. Go for a color. I love teal. But if not, don't go plain white. That piece has too much personality to be vanilla.

Holy SHIZZZZZ! You're one savvy furniture hunter! I'm jealous. I say GO BOLD! It'd be gorgeous in either teal or avocado!

I love the green color. I am also jealous that you now have a place to paint it without making you whole family inhale paint fumes!

Liz Noonan said...

oh yes, bold or go home, i agree!

Go with the color you want - if you don't you'll always wish you had!
When I hear "avocado green" I think of that atrocious green from the '70s, so I was relieved to see that wasn't what you were referring to!
Love your blog, I found it through our local ReStore when they featured your kid's kitchen. Very inspirational!

That hutch is fantastic!! I wish I could talk down the prices at our thrift store. Something like that would be about $100+. Don't they know they are a thrift store?
Have a good trip!

what kind of crazy Salvation Army do you live near? i find that the Salvation Army & Goodwill here, in Savannah, are overpriced. (after the first time i read your blog i was inspired and went to both :) ) alas, i find most of my wares from Craigslist... speaking of, i just got a midcentury modern dresser and want to get some new drawer pulls that aren't so modern... thoughts?
