refashion: ladies skirt to girls dress

I haven't done a refashion in a long time!

Please pardon the wrinkles! I didn't realize how bad it was until I downloaded the photos.

I found this skirt at Salvation Army for $1.50. I knew immediately that I wanted to make it into a dress for Sutton.

Black clothes are hard to come by for kids, especially little girls. Which is unfortunate because I really love black on little girls, it feels unexpected. The other day I was shopping at a kids consignment store and a woman that was perusing the racks next to me asked, "Do parents of girls ever tire of pink?" Uh, YES! I am not opposed to pink but I like variety and thankfully so does Sutton.

Utilizing the finished top of the skirt and the hem, I took in one side seam and used the leftover fabric to make straps and cap sleeves.

I really love the gathering detail at the waist.

I left the original waistline intact but after I finished I realized that I would have to cut the underarm for comfort. It was a last minute adjustment on a Saturday night but it came out okay.

I need to get back into doing refashions. They are quick and simple projects. I love the instant gratification!

They make Sutton pretty happy too!

That girl just gets cuter & cuter. Her hair is getting long again!

The dress is adorable too - and I love the color, it is definitely unexpected but it's a nice change.

Love this dress and the photos!! :) I'm into refashioning lately too for the more instant gratification. PS I made my daughter the ugliest black pajamas (from a cheap men's shirt) but will have to reconsider black if I find something pretty like this skirt. :)

i love black on babies/kids. I don't have kids, but I do get tired of only seeing girls in Disney Princess Pink. That's a really cute dress and I love the last photo of Sutton. SO adorable. I love that girl.

That is positively adorable. Makes me wish even more that I'd listened to my mom and learned how to sew.

This is so cute! You know I'm a big fan of black and LOVE it on girls too. She is adorable and growing up so fast! You did a great job. Thanks for reminding me of the 3 tops and 2 skirts I have been saving aside to refashion into dresses for my girls. Just haven't gotten around to it. Maybe I shall try this week after seeing this cute dress!

That dress is perfect! I saw a really cute (but WAY too small for me) shirt at a thrift store the other day and really wanted to make something for my little Naomi (same age as Gemma) and I immediately thought of you and almost got it just so I could pick your brain on what you would do with it. Maybe I need to go back and get it. I'm really curious now!
