three skirts

I love polka dots. Especially big polka dots. So when I spotted this mini-skirt at the thrift store I had to buy it. BUT I don't wear mini skirts so I decided I would turn it into a skirt for Sutton. It was an extremely simple thing to do and took less then an hour.

the before:

the after:

I think she likes it!

A little tip- To minimize rolling or twisting elastic in an elastic waist skirt stitch around the top of your casing (about 2/16" from the edge) before adding the elastic. Then do a vertical stitch down the width of the elastic on each side seam.

Here are two more skirts that I made for Sutton from junior sized skirts. Each of these skirts are all a little long but I prefer that because a) I feel like little girls skirts (and shorts too) tend to be too short and b) with the long length and the elastic waist she will be able to wear the skirts for a very long time.

FINALLY! Someone else who can't stand short skirts! It is SO hard to find skirts at a decent length these days....even for young girls! That to me is SO CRAZY. Thank you for your inspiration!

I've been stalking your blog for a few weeks now, linked from another blog. Love it!

So cute! I just bought a skirt for myself and it was way too short so I decided to make it into a skirt for my 10 year old. I'll get to it one of these days. :)

catherine- thanks! me too!

kristan- i have a brother ex-660. it's great.

suze- i know! why do people want to dress their little girls in a skimpy way? craziness!

mauri- i understand completely! if you look close at the before picture there is a pile of stuff to be mended or refashioned asap. underneath the table there is probably three times that waiting for me to 'get around to it'!

Nice! Thanks for the idea. My girl is a skirt and dress wearer. I also think most skirts these days are on the short side.

Beautiful job! I'm with you on the too-short skirt thing. Gotta be able to play! I bought a many-sizes-too-small dress at the thrift shop the other day because I loved the fabric and the great pockets. Now I have to wait for my baby to get big enough so I can make the best use of the fabric.

Oooooh, I love polka dots too. Great job! Sutton is very lucky to have such a talented mama.

P.S. I'm a teensy bit envious of your sewing space-- it looks so organized. (my sewing stuff is currently taking over the dining room table-- we've been having picnics on the kitchen floor for a week now.)

So cute!!! I'm surprised the large dots "work" on a small person. Love it!

Love the skirts! I'm so jealous you can just whip that off like that...and of you're beautifully organized sewing space. Your daughter is just beautiful. That 2nd after pic of her is stunning. Can't wait to see what you create next.

steph and kim- it's all about choosing the right angle and cropping the picture- my sewing area is a MESS! i am so thankful to have it though! i did the dining room table thing for a long time. it's a pain!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

So simple. If you only knew how impossible that seems to me...

okay, love the skirts but did you have to remove part of the material or is all you did was add elastic? I might have missed something somewhere.

Erin said...

@Jill- I just reread my post and I wasn't very clear- sorry! I did remove some of the material from each skirt. With the skirt inside out laying flat on a table or the floor I pinned a few inches (down the entire length of the skirt) in from the original side seam, keeping parallel to the original seam. Then I sewed a new seam and finished the new seam with my serger. Then I added the elastic waist (if needed- skirt #2 and #3 already had elastic waist bands). I hope this makes sense!
