thonet chairs

I haven't painted the hutch yet but I have already bought more items to paint! I found six vintage (1943) Thonet style chairs at the same antique store I mocked in this post. I still feel that antique stores are over priced but you can get lucky every now and then. And boy did I get lucky this time! I got the chairs for $25 each for a total of $150 (marked down from $240 so they wouldn't go any cheaper, I did ask though!). I don't usually spend that kind of money but I fell in love with the chairs and they are all in great condition.

Here are some inspiration photos via google (sorry I don't remember the sources):

I am painting my chairs yellow. I finished one a few minutes ago:

I love it! My sister-in-law and brother-in-law painted their dining room chairs (see them here). They are smart though, instead of using spray paint they used an air compressor paint sprayer. I might beg him to let me borrow it. I could save so much time and money!

Update: I just talked to Michael. He likes the chair but he thinks I have a yellow obsession and wants to have an intervention! :) He suggests we have a rainbow assortment of chairs. I am open to the idea but I am afraid that it would look too crazy. Thoughts??

Oh Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. And frankly, you couldn't have picked a better color than yellow. You'll have some cheerful chairs!

Rainbow rainbow rainbow! My friends had different color chairs at their dining room table and it was wonderful.

I really like those chairs! We NEVER find anything cool like those in Vegas:( I like the yellow and am a little more than unsure about the rainbow colors. Michael is right on the intervention, there ARE other colors in the crayon box, Erin! Wish I could tell you in words how much I love you!

I love your new chairs. I love the yellow and would vote for all yellow. I totally understand trying to make the husband happy to though. I would be too scared to to paint them all a different color.
Maybe you could do four yellow and two another color. Good Luck!

Ooooh! LOVE your chair! I like yellow quite a bit myself but I think your hubby may be on to something with using different colors. Maybe instead of the entire rainbow with each chair a different color you could choose two other colors and do two chairs in each color? I love the green in your example pictures above! And the pumpkin orange is cool too! Good luck! I'm sure they'll turn out fantastic! Please post pictures when you've finished them!
Sincerely,
Christine aka The Stampin' Ninja

Sorry Michael, I too am loving the yellow :) Besides, if you have different colors the kiddos will be fighting over the red , orange, pink, blue and green chairs all the time :)

What color would you consider doing? What color is the hutch and table? That would help me picture things better.

I'm partial to all yellow. Or maybe like the poster said above, 4 yellow and 2 of another color. I love the shape! And even though Michael thinks you're yellow obsessed, you don't really have tons of color in your house. I don't think 6 yellow chairs would be overboard.

Hey, I'm new to your blog and I love it! I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the color yellow. But I guess if you need come up with a compromise between you and your husband, you could maybe pick yellow and one or two other colors to mix it up a bit and not have to do a whole rainbow of colors. Good luck!

silly michael. it's not like you have yellow walls or a yellow couch and a yellow rug. . . i like the yellow chairs, but the idea of 4 yellow and 2 of another color could be nice.

RAINBOW!!! Do you follow sewliberated.typepad? Her rainbow chairs are precious :) I have the opposite problem...I would LOVE rainbow chairs but hubby tends to be a little conservative. <3Ashley

Cool chairs! The yellow makes me smile. So cheerful. I'm not feeling the rainbow idea. Sorry Michael.

take some inspiration from picture #4. instead of a traditional rainbow, throw some black, white, &/or gray in there to make it seem less roy g. biv.

i'm so jealous of this find. wish i had them!

I love the yellow. Maybe you mix it up half and half with one other color, like a pale gray.

Lucky find! I think that they will be adorable. I maybe wouldn't do rainbow, but a few colors thrown in like your last inspiration photo may not be a bad idea.

So I am pretty sure you have the best thrift/antique stores in your area. Love your new yellow chairs!

I think you should paint them with zebra stripes and leopard spots to match your .... oh wait. ;) Can't wait to see how they turn out, love.

Definitely multi-colors. I suppose it really depends on the room, but I love the way it looks when chairs are different. Then everybody gets to choose their favorite for dinnertime. ;-)

I can never decide on a color or a pattern, so I've grown to love the mismatch look. I never buy more than 2 of the same plates, bowls, glasses, even silverware. There are so many awesome patterns out there--who can pick just one style and go with it every night?

I love it all! I think that you have the best store ever! I can rarely find anything interesting in my thrift store. I really like the yellow, but I'm in the middle of putting yellow everywhere in my house. I just spray painted a box last night yellow and it's a little bit school bus yellow. I'm debating getting another can of yellow paint. What color are you using on your chairs?

I just stumbled upon your blog and was surprised by the name!! I have a daughter who is 13 and her name is Sutton Grace. I am now a follower of your blog - you obviously have amazing taste.

I think different colors are good if they are complimentary or neutral - otherwise you can end up with a dining area that looks like a Tex-Mex restaurant! So perhaps with the yellow you love, something neutral to let the yellow pop? Perhaps half the chairs in yellow, the other half in grey?

HEy.
I like the yellow but I have to side with Michael on this. I think rainbow might be too extreme a term... but look at the not-too-garish assortment in pic #4. If you have 6 chairs, 3 colours will work in grown up colours (like teal and yellow and chocolate) rather than crayon kindergarden colours. What do y'all think?

I went to a play of Cinderlla last week and they had these chairs as props! I'd have never given them a second thought if I hadn't read this post! I love your blog!

Hi, I actually just bought yellow spray paint to do my thonet chair. Did you spray paint the hardware or somehow tape it off?
Thanks!
